You are now the proud owner of a finished manuscript and your next step is to head over to Staples to make 50 copies to send to all the publishers whose names you remember, right? Well, if you do this, you will be making a terrible mistake and wasting a lot of time and money. There is a way to go about getting your book published and it doesn’t begin with you sending a bunch of manuscripts off to random publishers. The steps to getting your book published include finding the right publisher for your work and sending this work in on the publisher’s terms. Publishers receive many thousands of manuscripts every year and most of these submissions never even get read. If you do not want your work to end up in the “slush” pile, then you will need to pay specific attention to which publishers you try and how you send them your manuscript.

When you start to compile your list of chosen publishers, you want to make absolutely certain they publish the type of work you are offering. A great way to waste some time would be sending your work off to a publisher and printer that specializes in anything other that what your book is about. If you write poetry, then you will want to look for a poetry book publisher or if you are more of an author for children, you will be looking for an independent children’s book publisher. When looking for a low cost book publisher, you can find them the same way, through research. Finding a publisher is just common sense coupled with a bit of research on your part. The library and internet are very helpful tools for researching which print publisher to include on your wish list.

Getting the guidelines for the publishers you have chosen is your next step towards successful publishing. Many publishers will not look at any unsolicited manuscripts they receive, and require a query letter before submission. You can find out if the publisher requires a query letter or samples by thoroughly reading through the guidelines they send you. It is most important to send in only work that meets the specific requirements if you want any hope of success. In some instances, the publisher will allow you to submit queries electronically, but this is still ultimately up to them. If you follow the guidelines then you will at least have a chance of them reading your manuscript.

If you follows these steps, including finding the right publisher and then submitting work the way they request it, your chances of success will be much higher. All of the tools mentioned like libraries and the internet will offer you much of the information you seek. Then, it will simply be a matter of getting your work to fit the specific guidelines set by each different publisher in which you are interested. The last step is the hardest of all really: sending off that hard-won manuscript and patiently waiting for an acceptance letter!
