In times gone by backpacker hostels used to be consider dingy, dirty, bed bug infested establishments but times have changed and now backpacker hostels can be found with accommodation standards so high the quality of accommodation is bordering on hotel standard.
In many ways though the hostels offer you more than a hotel does, with the option of saving money by using their communal kitchens, taking part in their free activities, often with the chance to win a trip or a popular activity or taking advantage of the many free things a backpackers hostel offers to attract business to their property. Your nights accommodation often includes things such as free internet time, free tea & coffee, free breakfasts and sometimes even free dinners. (You might even be able to get free accommodation if you’re willing to do a few hours cleaning per day!)
Another great way to save money is to take advantage of discount and membership cards offered by the various hostel chains in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Some notable companies are the VIP network, YHA and BBH.
Most recently, backpacking chain Nomads, have revamped their Nomads MAD backpacker discount card. This card which retails for $35 gives backpackers discounts of up to $3 per night on accommodation and hundreds of dollars worth of discounts on activities, transport, food and parties. More information on the Nomads MAD card can be found here http://nomadshostels.com/mad-backpacker-discount-card
So, if you’re on a budget in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji look out for the travellers discounts cards and backpacker hostels that offer you great rates and loads of free stuff! Of course when all else fails there are also options like camping and eating two minute noodles!
