People understand that good armies have good intelligence gathering. They can do things that seem amazing when seen from the outside. As affiliate marketers we too must take advantage of good intelligence gathering. In fact it is essential if you want to move forward in your affiliate marketing endeavors.

You start with a product that you are going to recommend to a group of people. If you want to make this easier, you are going to have a product that is desperately wanted by that group of people. The more desperately they want it, the easier it is.

As you do your keyword research you learn what it is these people are looking for. You learn how many of those people are looking for it. You learn how they search for it. And, also, you learn who is currently providing what they are looking for.

This knowledge will allow you to make the best decisions on how to target your audience, which keywords or phrases to use, and the best way to write your sales copy. This knowledge should allow you to understand how profitable your keywords are and possibly the potential revenue from you keywords and phrases.

On another note, let us say you have decided on a particular keyword phrase, you have set up a sales page, and it is ranking well in the search engines. Not only can you put your affiliate link on the page but you have many other options available to you for monetizing your site.

Consider adding Google Adsense or some other pay per click system. Depending on your niche, advertisers may pay a lot of money for just a click from your site. Consider a pay per lead campaign where you get paid just for sending someone to a site to enter their email address.

But most importantly, consider adding a way for your visitors to get on your own mailing list. This is where affiliate marketing really takes off.

There are a lot of options open you to if you do you research and gather your intelligence. Skipping this step means wasted time and could also mean wasted money. You need to make it your first step in each new project. It is what the pros do.
