Directories are websites listing hand-picked collections of links, sorted by categories.

Unlike search engines who use programs and scripts to scan the Internet for all public websites, directories use human editors and user contributions to build a quality index.

Submitting your website to top directories is a very important step in improving your search engine rankings and winning free organic traffic. Why? Because directories often carry a high PageRank (search engine's way of identifying the importance of a site) and having a link to your website from a top directory, will carry-over a portion of the PageRank to your site.

The task of submitting your site to directories is often a manual labor-intensive process, requiring you to go through several steps per each directory you are submitting to. Click an email verification link, provide more information about your website etc. For this reason, a misconception was created that it is sufficient to submit to the top 5 or 10 directories and be done with it.

Not true!

Submitting your site to 2,000 quality directories is a much better approach. While some links will be discounted (not counted in the eyes of the search engines) a lot of links will be counted and your site is going to enjoy better rankings, more back-links and overall more organic free traffic.

When submitting to directories, make sure you use a qualified Internet Marketing company, such as SoftwareProjects, to ensure your links are not being submitted to "link farms", black-listed directories or directories with a PageRank of zero.
