Learn without playing

They say you learn by doing, but when it comes to poker sometimes you may not have the funds to play, or at least the bankroll you need to play the game you’d like to. So in honor of all of us who can’t “do” (including me, as I’d love to take a shot at big buy-in tournaments or higher limit games that I can’t afford), here’s a list of ways to learn without doing.

Read a book on strategy – No player’s poker book library could be complete without Doyle Brunson’s Super/System (1 and 2) or Harrington on Hold’em (1 and 2, Volume 3 is optional). I think books like Dan Harrington’s are particularly useful because they contain exercises after each chapter that require you to think deeper about certain hold’em hand situations, as well as provide insight from Harrington on how he would play the hand. The best book for low limit games is the tome by Lee Jones. Foremost poker theorist David Sklansky also has a relatively new book on no limit that I would recommend. I also like the new Full Tilt Poker tournament book that has chapters on a variety of games.

Join a discussion group – This allows you to post some hands you played and seek others’ thoughts about how you played them and how you could have played them. Plus, if you just to love to talk about poker there are plenty of discussions on a number of topics. The best are 2 + 2, rec.gambling.poker, Andy Bloch’s WPT Fan and Daniel Negreanu’s Full Contact Poker. Do a Google search and you’ll find these and more.

Watch a big game online – Online poker isn’t quite on its death bed yet, despite the recent laws passed by Congress. Some big sites like Party Poker have pulled out of the U.S. market, but the sites that remain are seeing lots of action. Full Tilt Poker in particular is a good site to watch a game in action. Some of the pros affiliate with the site, such as Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow and John D’Agostino, are frequently playing in big buy-in no limit games on the site. Feel free to railbird and see how they and other big game players strategize. As well, you could railbird at the final table of major online tournaments. Poker Stars holds a $200-$500 buy in event every Sunday with first place reaching $100,000 or more. If you’re in to tournament play, this is a great opportunity to see final table strategy in place.
